About Perlis.

Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia. It lies at the northern part of the west coast of peninsular Malaysia to the north,perlis bordered by state Songkhla Thailand and to the south its bordered by state of kedah. Perlis Indera Kayangan is the name of this state and it also was called Palit by the Siamese when it was under their influence. Perlis, the northern gem of malaysia, exudes natural beauty and characterised by sprawling paddy fields. its historical background is marked by ancient archaeological discoveries and its multiracial society is a fascinating amalgamation of Malays, Chinese, Indians and Thai as it shares a border with Thailand.

Thing you can do while at Perlis.

For shopping addicted, your visit may not be complete if you do not go to Padang Besar for shopping. This town borders Thailand and is popular with tourists and locals who want to purchase duty-free goods. The Padang Besar Arcade sells foodstuff, handicrafts, clothes and other household products. The Emas Kerajang Complex sells liquor, souvenir, perfumes and imported chocolates. Pop over to Pekan Siam, a town in Thailand which is just across the railway tracks and purchase some souvenirs, clothing or textiles. You can even try some Thai food at the restaurants here.

The other bazaar shopping you can go to is Wang Kelian Sunday Market which is opened everyday. This market situated along Thai-Malaysia border. This market sells food, clothes, fruits, handicrafts and other household products. Its place where you can see a lot of Thai food.

Hutan Lipur Bukit Air has waterfalls and streams that originates from the tropical rainforest. This park is another good venue for picnics and camping.

Visiting ethno botanical garden, Rimba Herba at Bukit Air has over 1,000 plants which include medicinal plants and herbs such as Tongkat Ali, Kacip Fatimah, Mengkudu, Kayu Manis and Cekor. It is opened from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday with admission fee of RM1 per adult and RM0.50 per child. 

Outdoor Rock Climbing in the limestone hills of Bukit Keteri with over 50 sport climbing routes that are bolted by the world's climbing team Mammut & Camp5, the crags split into 2 next to each other and the rockfaces rising up about 150m. The range of difficulty is from beginner to expert and many varieties of climbs are available.

 in the limestone hills of Bukit Keteri with over 50 sport climbing routes that are bolted by the world's climbing team Mammut & Camp5, the crags split into 2 next to each other and the rockfaces rising up about 150m. The range of difficulty is from beginner to expert and many varieties of climbs are available.

Unique arched white Bridge

When in Kuala Perlis, you will not missed this bridge. It is unique high arched white bridge connecting the town to "Kampong Nelayan" (Fishermen's Village). its height allow residents to cross the Perlis river while allowing boat to pass below.

Kangar, beautiful Alwi Mosque 

Approaching Kangar from Kuala Perlis, we saw two mosques appearing back to back. The larger one in the background with the grey domes is the famous Masjid Alwi or known as Masjid Kangar. It used to be the State Mosque. The new state mosque is gold domed and located in Arau the Royal Capital of Perlis. Back to Masjid Alwi. It has a long history being built in 1910 with its beautiful Moorish style. It is a pride of Kangar folks although many new buildings has been built in town.

Kangar, a meeting of river

It is fun to walkabout Kangar along the riverside pavements. The main river "Sungai Perlis" has tributaries of other rivers, "Sg. Kechor", "Sg. Korok", "Sg. Repoh" and "Sg. Gial". So there are also many small bridges to cross in downtown Kangar. You will walk by the major important places of Kangar including State Museum and Heritage Hall, the Chief Minister Residence, Central Market, Wholesale Market, Alwi Mosque and Perlis Islamic Center. Also you will see a giant sculpture of a keris and sword with the Perlis State flag and the limestone hill in the background.

Tasik Melati - A picturesque man-made lake

About 10km north of Kangar is Tasik Melati - a popular local attraction to walk around the lake or over the many bridges. In the early morning or late afternoon, it is particularly nice with the balmy breeze. There are many small islets of sand bars with big trees which is unusual and cool. Admission and parking is free. You can rent different fun small boats to go around the lake.

Paddy fields

All over Perlis, you will see rice fields here and there. Rice planting is an important industry. Roads are built across rice fields and so driving along the road, you will see rice fields on both side of the road. Depending on the season of the year, you will green saplings growing in flooded fields, yellow loaded grains waiting for harvest or brown stalks after harvesting.

Perlis State Park

Among the main tourist attractions are Perlis State Park and Gua Kelam. Perlis State Park Situated on the longest continuous range of limestone hills in the country called the Nakawan Range, the park consists of Mata Ayer Forest Reserve and Wang Mu Forest Reserve with a total area of about 5000 hectares. Some of the attractions in the park include various caves such as Gua Kelam and Gua Wang Burma which is located within the 500 year-old Setul limestone formation. 

Snake and Reptile Farm 

The Snake and Reptile Farm at Bintong, about 10 km north of Kangar has live snakes such as pythons, cobras and pit vipers. It was established in 1981 by the Institute for Medical Research to study and develop anti-venom for snakebites. Crocodiles, iguanas, monitor lizards and tortoises are also housed here. This farm is opened daily with admission fee of RM4 per adult and RM1 per child.

Kota Kayang Museum

For history, try visiting Kota Kayang Museum in Kuala Perlis where you can learn the history of Perlis. Artifacts such as stone tools, royal regalia, documents, brassware, coins and weapons are exhibited here. Admission to the museum is free and it is opened daily from 9am to 5pm. 

Galeri Diraja

Galeri Di Raja in Arau has collections of potraits, royal regalia, weapons and state gifts that belongs to the state royalt. Admission is also free.

How to approach?          Hentian Duta

If you are in Kuala Lumpur and is a budget traveller, take a bus from Hentian Duta which is located at Jalan Duta, KL to Kangar, Kuala Perlis, Changlun or Padang Besar depending on your destination. The main bus companies that you can travel with are Mara Liner or Transnasional. The journey to Kangar will take about 8 hours

If you have the time and prefer to travel by train, take the KTM Intercity Train to Arau or Padang Besar. The journey from KL Sentral to Arau takes approximately 12 hours 20 minutes.

If you are driving from KL, head for North-South Expressway. You will pass by the state of Perak, Penang, Kedah. Exit at Changlun Interchange and go along the Changlun-Perlis Expressway to Perlis.

You can also take a flight from Kuala Lumpur by using Alor Setar airport in the state of Kedah as there isn't any airport here. From Alor Setar, the duration by road to Kangar takes about 40 minutes. AirAsia, FireFly and MAS fly to Alor Setar regularly.

Food  

Being close to Thailand means that you can find plenty of Thai food here. One dish which is unique to this state is called "Kensom", a fish dish that you eat with rice. The other one is "Nasi Kandar", ricetaken with curry dish, fried chicken, mutton, fried prawns, fried squid and vegetables.
